Apuleius, Lucius. COMMENTARII A PHILIPPO BEROALDO CONDITI IN ASINU[M] AUREU[M] LUCII APULEII. (Venice: Bartholomeum de Zanis. Nov. 11, 1504). Folio. ff.237(i.e. 238). Central text with surrounding commentary. Leaf A2 verso with a fine woodcut border. Some large & small woodcut initials. Leaf A1, the 3-line title with an old stain (a light oil?) on lower section. Otherwise a very clean, attractive copy in the original binding of tooled calf spine and oak boards. Some old neat repairs to spine, filling in some lost areas of calf. Hand lettered spine label. Two fore-edge clasps, one old, one recent. Early vellum manuscript "waste" for sewing the text block.  A very attractive post-incunable.  If it was 5 years earlier the price would be at least $7500.00.                                                                                $2,500.00The text of Apuleius's Metamorphoses, or The Golden Ass, with the extensive commentary of Filippo Beroaldo (1453-1505).
