Rudyard Kipling
>From Sea to Sea in the Original Publisher's Box; RARE INDEED

New York: Doubleday, 1899. First Edition, First Printing. A Fine copy of
the True First Edition, First Printing (slight rubbing to the spine ends
and board corners), housed in a Very Good example of the RARE ORIGINAL
BOX complete
with the label. (The set is now commonly called "Letters of Travel). (The
UK first edition was not published until 1900.) [PLEASE NOTE: Rudyard
Kipling was born in, and spent most of his life in, India where the
Swastika was a symbol of peace. He stopped using it when the Nazis adopted
it.] The volumes contain letters and travel reports written by Kipling
for newspapers between 1887 and 1889. The set includes letters from
journeys within India between November 1887 and February 1888, as well as
from his journey back to England (thus the title "From Sea to Sea") between
March and September 1889. The set includes the first authorized edition of
"American Notes," "Letters of Marque," "The City of Dreadful Night" and
"The Smith Administration". In his Preface to the collection, Kipling
states that he was "forced" to issue the set "by the enterprise of various
publishers" who were pirating and embellishing his works. The ORIGINAL BOX
WITH PUBLISHER'S LABEL on one side (as issued) is one of only a few
remaining in existence, making this an important and highly-notable copy
which would add distinction to any collection. [The set was originally
issued in the box and with each volume wearing a dust jacket, but only one
set wearing the dust jackets is known to exist.] Rudyard Kipling won the
1907 Nobel Prize for Literature, making him the first author writing in
English to win the Prize and remains the youngest author ever to win the
Prize. Of him Henry James stated: "Kipling strikes me personally as the
most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I
have ever known." A Collection-Distinguishing set in the RARE ORIGINAL BOX.
Fine. Hardcover in Good Rare Original Box. (2642)
