Adam Ferguson: The History of the Progress and Termination of the Roman Republic. London: Jones & Company, 1825. Octavo (22.5 cm), bound in nineteenth-century half calf by Sotheran (of Sackville St., London), gilt-tooled spine and morocco spine label, marbled endpapers and page edges; viii, 469, [1] pp.; engraved extra title-page and frontispiece, folding map.

Early (first?) one-volume edition of this popular and influential history of the Roman Republic by the historian and social philosopher Adam Ferguson (1723-1816), an eminent figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. Binding with rubbing to the boards, wear to the corners and spine ends; erased signature on the front free-endpaper, some offsetting to the engravings, minor damp-stain to the fore-edge of the first four leaves, a few light scattered spots, else very clean and sound, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the early booklabel of [?.] B. Saunders of the Bengal Civil Service.
