Julius Caesar; Martin Bladen (trans. & ed.): C. Julius Cæsar’s Commentaries of his Wars in Gaul, and Civil War with Pompey. To which is Added Aulus Hirtius, or Oppius’s Supplement of the Alexandrian, African and Spanish Wars. With the Author’s Life. Adorn’d with Sculptures from the Designs of the Famous Palladio. Made English from the Original Latin by Captain Martin Bladen. The Second Edition, Improved, with Notes explaining the most difficult Places, the Ancient and Modern Geography exactly compar’d, and Dionysius Vossius’s Supplement collected from Plutarch, Appian, Dion, &c. which makes a Connexion between the Wars in Gaul and Civil War with Pompey. London: Printed for R. Smith without Temple Bar; and sold by Cha. Smith at the Buck between the Two Temple Gates in Fleetstreet, and E. Curll at the Peacock near St. Clement’s Church in the Strand, 1706. Octavo (20.5 cm) in modern, but not recent, sheepskin-backed cloth, gilt-lettered morocco spine label, page edges dyed red; [40], 363, [13] pp.; publisher’s adverts bound at the rear; with 16 engraved maps, plans and plates, all but one of which are folding; bound without the frontispiece. ESTC T136439.

Second, “improved” edition of Bladen’s translation, first published the year before, handsomely illustrated with copper-engraved maps and plans. Bladen fittingly dedicated the work to the Duke of Marlborough, a considerable military strategist in his own right. Binding with some rubbing and wear to the spine ends; title-page a bit browned, occasional spots, offsetting and toning to the contents, but generally quite clean and bright, firmly bound. Front free-endpaper with the small bookseller's label of Henry Sotheran Ltd.
