Sir Thomas More; Thomas Frognall Dibdin (ed.): A most pleasant, fruitful, witty Work of the best State of a Public Weal, and of the new Isle called Utopia; Written in Latin by the Right Worthy and Famous Sir Thomas More, Knight, and translated into English by Raphe Robinson, A.D. 1551. A new Edition; with copious Notes (including the whole of Dr. Warner's) and a Biographical and Literary Introduction. By the Rev. T. F. Dibdin, F.S.A. London: Printed by William Bulmer, at the Shakspeare Press, for William Miller, 1808. First edition thus. Two volumes, 8vo (20 cm), untrimmed in early/original boards, rebacked in later calf with gilt-lettered morocco spine labels, new endpapers; viii, clxxx, 141 pp.; [4], 320 pp.; with the errata leaf, engraved portrait frontispiece, in-text woodcuts.

Published a year before Bibliomania, the book that was to make Thomas Dibdin famous as a bibliographer. Fittingly, Dibdin's edition of Utopia contains the first serious attempt at a bibliography of More's work, as well as extensive notes and biographical material. Contents toned with some browning to the untrimmed edges, light damp-stain to the last few leaves of vol. II, a few occasional small spots, else clean and sound, firmly bound.
