John Carne: Syria, the Holy Land, Asia Minor, &c. Illustrated. In a Series of Views Drawn from Nature by W. H. Bartlett, William Purser, &c. London: Fisher, Son, & Co., (1836-38). First edition. Three volumes, 4to (27.5 cm), in full polished navy blue calf tooled and lettered in gilt, front and rear boards with gilt-stamped title, "Carne's Syria, &c.", all page edges gilt; 80, 76, 100, [4] pp.; 3 extra engraved title-pages and 119 engraved plates, including the two maps, with tissue guards (complete). Blackmer 291.

In the 1820s, Carne had traveled extensively through the Ottoman Empire and Middle East, publishing a popular account of his journeys, Letters from the East, in 1826, so he was a natural choice to write the text to accompany these handsomely engraved views of the region, most from drawings by Bartlett, but with contributions from Thomas Allom and others. Some scuffing and rubbing to the boards, bumping and wear to the edges and extremities, one spine label perished, vol. III front inner hinge cracked but secure; scattered spotting, staining and browning to the edges of the plates, mild toning to the text leaves, penciled gift inscription to the front paste-downs; else quite clean and sound. A handsome set.
