A Handbook of Nyasaland, compiled by S. S. Murray, Chief Clerk, Nyasaland Government. London: Crown Agents for the Colonies, 1922. First edition thus, 8vo (22 cm), in original publisher's purple cloth with gilt-tooled title and crest to the front board, speckled page edges; 314 + xxxvi pp.; advertisements, black&white photographs, folding colored map.

An impressively comprehensive survey of the peoples, population centers, trade, livestock, flora and fauna of colonial Nyasaland, now the Republic of Malawi in southeastern Africa. With many pages of ads evoking the period ("Tents for Africa and Hot Climates"; "'Chop Boxes' a Specialty"; "Colonial Outfits for India and the Tropics"; etc.). Spine sunned, modest wear and bumping to the extremities, mild toning to the leaves, but quite clean and sound, firmly bound. The publishers have affixed a label to the rear paste-down stating that the binding of the book "has been specially prepared in order to render the work impervious to the ravages of insects."
