Samuel Richardson: The Works of Samuel Richardson. With a Sketch of His Life and Writings, by the Rev. Edward Mangin, M.A. In Nineteen Volumes. London: Printed for James Carpenter and William Miller, 1811. First edition thus. Nineteen volumes (complete), small 8vo (18 cm) in  early/period polished calf with gilt-lettered spine labels; engraved frontispiece to vol. I.

Comprising: Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded (4 vols.); The History of Clarissa Harlowe (8 vols.); The History of Sir Charles Grandison (7 vols.). Externally rather rough, but internally very sound. Joints cracked with many boards detached, some with paper tape repairs to the inner hinges, two spine labels perished, occasional light rubbing and wear to the extremities; spotting and offsetting to the frontispiece and general title-page of vol. I, occasional light toning and small spots elsewhere, but the contents in generally very good condition, quite clean and fresh. Front paste-downs of each volume with the early binder's label of Stephenson, 12 Parliament Street, and the engraved armorial bookplate of Barron Field (1786-1846), author and barrister, friend of Charles Lamb, Leigh Hunt, William Wordsworth and other literary contemporaries, and later, a judge in New South Wales, where he published the first volume of verse to appear in Australia (1819). Most volumes with the additional (later) armorial bookplates of W. T. Marriott.
