William Gilpin: Three Essays: on Picturesque Beauty; on Picturesque Travel; and on Sketching Landscape: to which is added a Poem, on Landscape Painting. Second edition. London: Printed for R. Blamire, in the Strand, 1794. Tall 8vo (22.5 cm) in early/period half russia and marbled boards, spines lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers; [4], viii, 143, [1], iii, [3] pp.; with the half-title page, final errata leaf, and seven plates, consisting of six tinted aquatints, one of which is hand-colored, and an engraved diagram (complete). ESTC T98990.

An influential work by William Gilpin (1724-1804), the English cleric, essayist and watercolorist who arguably did more than anyone else to popularize the Romantic-era ideal of the "picturesque" in nature and art. Binding with wear and chipping to the spine head and foot, front joint/hinge cracked but holding; contents with some offsetting from the plates, occasional light spotting and a few small stains, but generally very clean and fresh. Front paste-down with the small tasteful book label of P. R. Glazebrook.
