John Conybeare: A Defence of Reveal'd Religion against the Exceptions of a late Writer, in his Book, Intituled, Christianity as Old as the Creation, &c. London: Printed for S. Wilmot, Bookseller in Oxford: and Sold by James and John Knapton [et al], 1732. Second edition (same year as the first); 8vo (20 cm) in early/period speckled calf; [8], 467, [5] pp.; with the half-title page and publisher's adverts; woodcut decorations and initials. ESTC N496.

Binding with wear to the corners and spine ends, boards slightly bowed, front joint/hinge cracked with the front board held by the cords; intermittent damp-staining to the edges of the text block, cockling to the leaves. Armorial bookplate of the Earl of Ilchester, probably the 1st earl, Stephen Fox-Strangways (1704-1776), a Member of Parliament until he was raised to the peerage, the uncle of Charles James Fox, and the longtime lover of the memoirist Lord Hervey before entering into an arranged marriage with a thirteen year-old girl in 1735.

A response by John Conybeare (1692-1755), rector of Exeter College and later Bishop of Bristol, to deism in general, and in particular Matthew Tindal, whose Christianity as Old as the Creation (1730) was known as "the Deists' Bible."
