(Amsterdam: No pub. 1630). Folio. ff.(8),293,(1). Double column text. With the final blank leaf. Title within a double ruled border, with a large woodcut of the Ark of the Covenant. Cont. blind tooled paneled polished calf, spine finely rebacked with orig. spine remnants laid down. Title and the other 7 leaves of  the first gathering somewhat browned, otherwise an exceptional complete copy. Many copies recorded are incomplete. A revision of the "Ferrara version" which was printed in 1553 and is the first translation of the Old Testament into Spanish. The second, of the Old Testament alone, "a new edition" was printed in 1611, followed by the 1630 here offered. This printing is notable as being overseen by Menasseh ben Israel (1604-1657), the famous Rabbi of Amsterdam, who had established the first Hebrew printing press in Amsterdam in 1626.
This Spanish Bible was intended mainly for the Spanish speaking Jews who had been driven from Spain and Portugal. Darlow & Moule #8479.
