Some Regional Tidbits :

  - -

[Florida] “Me and Pa in Florida by Marcia Oral Clutter” - Published by
the author, printed in Kissimmee by the Press of the Gazette, in 1933.
4th revised edition. An interesting faux travelogue by the improbably
named author, who was an “Author, Impersonator, Artist”. Written in the
form of a letter in a painfully untutored dialect of unknown origin and
featuring spelling which is two steps beyond original, this is by turns
somewhat amusing and deeply offensive, and was presumably intended to
lure tourists to the Sunshine State, though god knows what effect it
actually had on them. Softcover. 4.75”x7”. 52 pages, black & white and
line illustrations. Covers with some wear and light soil, corners
thumbed, creased, pages age-toned. $20

[Vermont] John Spargo 1925 Bennington Meeting House Marker Controversy.
- English-born Bennington Vermont historian John Spargo gives his side
of a controversy over the origins of the marker set up at the original
Bennington Meeting House, for which somebody else had taken credit. The
details give an interesting and eye-opening look behind the scenes of
the development and funding of 1920s historical markers. It wasn’t all
tea & crumpets and pleasantries. Folded sheet. 7.5”x10.5”. Folds, some
soil, corner chip. $20

[Massachusetts] "The Inauguration of Marion LeRoy Burton Ph.D., D.D. as
President of Smith College The Fifth of October, MCMX" - Printed by the
Rumford Press in Concord, New Hampshire and published in Northampton in
1911. Marion LeRoy Burton was the second President of Smith College,
which had been under the guidance of Laurenus Clark Seelye since its
opening in 1875. Burton [1874-1925] became an important figure in
American higher education, serving as president of Smith [1910-1917],
the University of Minnesota [1917-1920], and the University of Michigan
[1920-1925]. He oversaw the construction of many buildings at both
Minnesota and Michigan, and was nicknamed "Burton the builder" at the
latter, became a close friend of Calvin Coolidge while at Smith and gave
the speech nominating him for the presidency at the Republican National
Convention in 1924, and invited Robert Frost to be a Poet-in-Residence
at the University of Michigan. This book gives the roster of attendees
at the inauguration ceremonies, the schedule of the ceremonies, and the
text of the speeches. Board covers. 6.5”x9.5”, 93+ pages, portrait
frontispiece with tissue guard. Covers banged up a bit, some light soil,
corners numbed, etc. Pages with scattered minor soil. $20

[Massachusetts] 1931-34 Scrapbook of Rev. Robert Lewis Weis, Pastor of
the First Parish Church (Unitarian) of Scituate, Massachusetts. - The
Rev. Weis, of Saylesville, Rhode Island, studied at the Meadville
Theological Seminary in Chicago and the Pacific School for Unitarians at
Berkeley, California. He served as pastor of the First Parish Unitarian
Church in Scituate between 1931 and 1933. The scrapbook begins with a
letter of thanks for his work at the Bryn Mawr Community Church in
Chicago and a handwritten letter from the clerk of the Scituate church
welcoming him to the parish. It runs the course of two years with
newspaper clippings about church events or events which included the
Rev. Weis, as well as church programs and other memorabilia. According
to a letter on the last page, he interviewed to become pastor of the 2nd
Unitarian Church of Salem, Massachusetts in April, 1934 (he didn't get
the job). The First Parish Church of Scituate is one of the oldest
churches in America; the congregation was started by a group of
Nonconformists in London in 1616, most of them leaving England and
arriving in Scituate in September, 1634. Scrapbook. 10"x13", 20 leaves
with clippings and other memorabilia pasted to both sides. Minor soil,
light wear, first leaf detached but present. $20
