CHARLEVOIX, Pierre-Francois-Xavier de. HISTOIRE ET DESCRIPTION GENERALE
DE LA NOUVELLE FRANCE, AVEC LE JOURNAL HISTORIQUE D'UN VOYAGE FAIT PAR
ORDRE DU ROI DANS L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONNALE. Paris: Chez la Veuve
GANEAU, 1744. First Duodecimo Edition. Six duodecimo (3-3/4" x 6-3/4")
volumes bound in contemporary speckled calf leather with gilt-decorated
spines and matching leather spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges
red; title pages printed in red and black. Published the same year as
the quarto edition. Illustrated with 28 folding maps and plans by
Jacques Nicholas Bellin and 44 folding botanical engravings depicting 96
varieties of American flora, most of which have medicinal value. The
first general history of the French discoveries and settlements in North
America, covering the period 1500 to 1736, and one of the best and one
of the earliest depictions of Canada and the French settlement in the
Mississippi Valley through observations. Charlevoix, a Jesuit missionary
to New France, journeyed by canoe up the St. Lawrence River through the
Great Lakes and down the Mississippi to New Orleans, with stops at
missions and fur-trading posts along the way. This journey is described
in Volumes 5 and 6 titled JOURNAL DU VOYAGE FAIT PAR ORDRE DU ROI. CLARK
I 59: "one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, early
accounts of Louisiana"; HOWES C-307: "the principal work of this great
Jesuit traveller and historian and the pre-eminent authority on the
French period in the West"; LANDE 126: "one of the best authorities
concerning various Indian tribes, some of which no longer exist. The
laborious accuracy with which the work was executed can be estimated by
the fact that the maps, dated 1743, are marked with the latest
discoveries, in 1742, in the extreme north of America"; SABIN 12136.
Text and plates quite clean; owner name in ink at the top of each title
page with later small red ink ownership stamp of another owner on each
title page and occasional verso of map or text page. General wear to
bindings with a few spine labels lacking but all volumes tight and quite
presentable. Overall Very Good. (#019974) $4,500
