A Captain in the Royal Navy,... for Wanton, Tyrannical, Unprovoked, and Savage Cruelty, Towards Jane Prescott, His Wife... in the Consistory Court at Doctors Commons... London: Printed for G. Lister. 1785. First edition. 8vo. 111pp. plus (1)page of publisher's ads. Engraved frontispiece with 2 views illustrating Prescott's cruelty. Orig. calf, red calf label, over marbled boards (a bit soiled). Extremities of spine with minor chips and corners rubbed. Front hinge cracked but holding. Top blank fore-corner of title page clipped (probably removing a previous owner's name). An engraved plate with 5 portraits (from another work) is bound in at rear, and there is evidence of a removed pamphlet at back.  Small erasure/abrasion on the title page removing "of His Majesty's" from a line of text.    $300.00 (trade discount allowed)
A blurb on the title page states, "It appears by this trial, that Captain Prescott is so very ingenious in the art of tormenting... a woman, that he appears fully qualified to preside at a Spanish inquisition..."  No other copy for sale currently on-line.
