Gaurico, Pomponio. ...DE SCULPTURA, SEU STATUARIA, Libellus Elegantissimus Pictoribus, Sculptoribus, Statuariis, Architectis... Item Aeglogae Lepidissimae, Duae... Antwerp: Joannem Grapheum. 1528. Small 8vo. ff.(64). Finely bound in modern period style full calf, gilt and blind tooled panels and lettering. A faux early 16th century binding by master binder Philip Dusel. Full page woodcut device on verso of final leaf. Early brown ink design (a cup) around the printed text on the title page. Title page with a few old ownership signatures in faded ink. A few early manuscript notes in the margins.               $3,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
The rare second edition, after the Florence, 1504 first edition. It is the final printing in the author's lifetime (d. 1530), and this 1528 Antwerp edition is the only printing to contain two eclogues by Gaurico, added at the end of the book (also, these do not appear in the third edition of 1542). This is an important early treatise on art, sculpture, physiognomy, classical literature, and aesthetics. It has been called the first printed book describing the principles of perspective. The 1528 printing is edited by Cornelius Grapheus. BL Dutch STC p. 82; Brunet V. 2, 1505; see Cicognara #277-279, recording the editions of 1504, 1542, and 1609, but missing 1528; Adams G293 (under "Gauricus"). No copy of either the 1504 edition (which has sold for as much as 53,000 euros) or the 1528 second edition is currently on-line. No copy recorded of the 1528 edition at auction! (Rarebookhub)..
