[Rarebooks] FS: Limited SIGNED Edition of Eisenhower's CRUSADE IN EUROPE in scarce blue publisher's morocco

EISENHOWER, Dwight. CRUSADE IN EUROPE in Blue Morocco. Garden City: 
Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1948. First Edition. Bound in full blue 
morocco leather with a flaming sword in gilt and white leather onlays on 
the front cover, gilt-lettered spine with five raised bands, top edge 
gilt, gilt dentelles. Illustrated with drawings and photographs. As with 
the 1426 deluxe numbered copies, this copy has the facsimile page of the 
D-Day Order to send the troops to storm the beaches of Normandy, SIGNED 
by Eisenhower, which begins: "You are about to embark upon the Great 
Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the 
world are upon you." But it does not have the limitation page stating 
the number of copies printed, and the endpapers consisting of a map of 
the operations depict the ocean in blue rather than brown as in the 
limited edition. At the same time, the copyright page states "First 
Edition" only, as does the limited edition, without the disclaimer 
stating it is the first trade edition. The first 25 copies of the 
limited edition were bound in full red morocco leather and put aside for 
Eisenhower's personal use. We have had two of them over the years, each 
inscribed to one of his brothers. A colleague believes that only 11 
copies were issued in this blue morocco binding, but we have not been 
able to verify that. In addition to being SIGNED on the D-Day Order 
page, this copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the 
half-title page: "For: Joseph H S. Winne/with best wishes/and warm 
regard/from his friend/Dwight D. Eisenhower." We could find nothing 
about the recipient other than that he and his wife traveled in the U.S. 
with the Eisenhowers. Slight sunning to the spine, a few small nicks to 
leather. About Fine in a Near Fine blue cloth slipcase. (#019973)
