First edition, 8vo (21.5 cm), in full polished cat's-paw calf richly tooled in gilt, with gilt-lettered morocco spine label; [2], cxi, [1], 315, [1] pp.

A political writer who in his middle years turned his attention to ancient history and philosophy, Barthelemy Saint-Hilaire (1805-1895) was instrumental in popularizing the notion of the Suez Canal as well as the annexation of Tunis. He was reputed to be an illegitimate son of Napoleon I. Contents with scattered mostly light foxing, most noticeable on the first and last few leaves, otherwise clean and firmly bound in a fine, handsome French binding with just a touch of wear to the extremities and rubbing to the spine.
