With essays on Petrarque (Petrarch), Galilee (Galileo), Descartes, Spinoza, Goethe, Barthelemy Saint-Hilaire, etc. Binding with rubbing to the spine; toning to the edges of the text block, some spotting to the half-title and title-page, occasional light spotting elsewhere, otherwise clean and sound, firmly and elegantly bound. With the Chatsworth House library bookplate of Spencer Compton Cavendish, eighth Duke of Devonshire (1833-1908), the "model of the dutiful aristocrat" (ODNB).
