MORISON, Samuel Eliot (editor). JOURNALS AND OTHER DOCUMENTS ON THE LIFE
AND VOYAGES OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS. New York: Limited Editions Club,
1963. Folio (9" x 12") bound in full blue natural linen buckram with a
large black medallion of Columbus embossed on the front cover and a
gilt-lettered and decorated black leather spine label; 440 pages.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was so impressed with this book when it was
first published in 1942 that he allowed Morrison to join the Navy as an
historian. He left as a rear admiral in 1951 and eventually published a
definitive 15-volume history of the United States Navy in World War II.
Copy #39 of 1500 illustrated by Lima de Freitas with 65 black-and-white
text drawings and 5 double-page spreads, the latter having color
hand-applied at the Walter Fischer Studio, and maps by Rafael Palacios.
SIGNED by the illustrator on the colophon page. Monthly Letter laid in.
Bookplate on the verso of the front free endpaper. About Fine in a Fine
