Perceval Landon: Lhasa : An Account of the Country and People of Central Tibet and of the Progress of the Mission Sent there by the English Government in the Year 1903-4. London: Hurst and Blackett, 1905. Second edition. Two volumes, large, heavy 8vos (24 cm), in original publisher's red polished buckram lettered and decorated in gilt, top page-edges gilt; 414, 426 pp.; with a large colored folding map, a folding colored plan of Lhasa, 24 sepia photogravures (each with captioned tissue guard), and numerous black&white and color plates, including watercolors by the author, and in-text illustrations.

Bindings with sunning to the spines, modest bumping and wear to the extremities; text block of volume one with a crack between two page-gatherings, but secure; a few very occasional light spots to the leaves and plates, else a clean and sound set, with the handsome photogravures in fine condition.

As correspondent for the Times, Landon accompanied Sir Francis Younghusband on his expedition to "open" Tibet in 1903-04 and was one of the first Westerners to describe in detail the holy city of Lhasa. He would later become famous for his often-anthologized ghost story, "Thurnley Abbey." A lively and well-illustrated account.
