CAIRO & EGYPT, ca. 1916-18. A collection of material related to British-occupied Egypt, primarily during World War I, comprising:

Approximately 80 personal photographs, ca. 1916-18, measuring ca. 65mm x 40mm or larger. Subjects include: British officers, Egyptian Police, Turkish Prisoners Arriving, Indian Troops at the Pyramids, Street Scenes, Mosques, the Sphinx, Date Pickers, Grain Ships on the Nile, the Savoy Hotel (G.H.Q.), the Anzac Hostel, the Tree of the Virgin in El Matareya, Pompey's Pillar at Alexandria, the Obelisk at Matariyeh, etc., etc. Most of the photos are captioned in ink or pencil on the reverse, some dated. Some yellowing and light wear and creasing.

Three service members' portrait post cards (135 mm x 85 mm) of two British officers. One inscribed on the back, "From Artie with love. Cairo Egypt July 1918," another inscribed, "With best wishes. Ernie. Cairo, October, 1918." The latter with the blindstamp of the photographer: "Shoucain[?], Cairo." The third card appears to depict the same two officers sitting on a rooftop overlooking the city. Several of the personal snapshots above also depict these two men together, suggesting they must have been friends, or perhaps brothers.

Carte de visite (103mm x 62 mm), ca. 1890s(?), by John Hawke of Plymouth, possibly depicting the "Artie" in the portrait post card above as a much younger man. Photographer's info printed on both sides.

Certificate of Occupation of Arthur L. Hannaford, a Deputy Emergency Information Officer with the Ministry of Information, dated 25 Oct. 1943. We suspect that all the material above belonged to this same Arthur Hannaford ("Artie" in the portrait post card) and that he possibly returned to service in Cairo during World War II, having served there in the First World War. Much of the above material is enclosed in a British registered mail envelope addressed to "A Hannaford" in Brixham, South Devon and dated 22 April [19]36.
