E. A. Wallis Budge: The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology. London: Methuen & Co., 1904. First edition. Two volumes, large, heavy 8vos (26 cm), in original publisher's red cloth decorated in blind and gilt; 525, 431 pp.; with 98 colored plates (one folding) and 131 in-text illustrations.

Bindings with some rubbing and light water-spotting, bumping to the corners of the boards and text blocks; mild toning and occasional light spotting to the text leaves, but with the plates very clean, crisp and bright. No library or previous owners' markings.

First edition of this landmark study of ancient Egyptian religion, a work that has remained consistently in print to this day. The author, Ernest (later, Sir Ernest) Alfred Wallis Budge (1857-1934), was Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum from 1894-1924 and one of the world's foremost experts on ancient Near Eastern civilizations. His works on Egyptian mythology and religion influenced writers as diverse as James Frazer, William Butler Yeats and James Joyce. Watch our upcoming auctions for several other important works of Egyptology, including two other titles by Budge.
