Two volumes, 8vo (20.5 cm), in full early/period paneled calf, spines elaborately tooled in gilt; [20], 547, [1] pp. (pp. 514-527 misnumbered as 414-427); [4], 386, [4], 102 pp.; with 17 copper-engraved plates, including the frontispieces (complete, though some of the plates are numbered out of sequence, as issued). ESTC T86354.

Handsomely illustrated English edition of Alemán's popular picaresque novel first published in 1599, here translated from the rather loose (and decidedly anti-Catholic) French adaptation by Gabriel Brémond published in Amsterdam in 1695. Bindings with some bumping and wear to the extremities, joints starting but the boards are secure; vol. I lacking its front (blank) free-endpaper; contents with mild toning, occasional light browning and scattered spots, offsetting to the leaves opposite the plates, else clean and sound, securely bound, with nice crisp impressions of the plates by the Flemish engraver Gaspar Bouttats. Front paste-down of vol. I with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, a noted collector of eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings.
