(5-2/4" x 8-3/4") volumes bound in original paper-covered boards
lettered in black on the spines. Illustrated with a hand-colored
frontispiece in the first volume, hand-colored vignettes on each title
page, 41 hand-colored plates with tissue guards, and 2 uncolored folding
plates, complete as issued. The fine and delicately executed
illustrations engraved by L. Portman after Jacques Kuyper depict various
ethnic groups, often quite inaccurately, with chapters on the
inhabitants of Australia, America (including Mexico and Greenland),
Africa, and the Pacific islands (including Hawaii). Landwehr: STUDIES IN
