Selah Merrill: East of the Jordan: A Record of Travel and Observation in the Countries of Moab, Gilead, and Bashan. London: Richard Bentley & Son, 1881. First British edition; 8vo (21 cm) in an early/period prize binding by Relfe Brothers of full navy blue calf, with the gilt-tooled arms of Elizabeth College, Guernsey, on the front cover, marbled endpapers and page edges; xv, [1], 549 pp.; with plates and in-text illustrations, folding map.

Binding with edge-wear and scuffing, rubbing and wear to the spine, front and rear joints cracked but boards are holding; contents very mildly toned with a few scattered small spots. The author was a Congregationalist minister and the American consul in Jerusalem, as well as a rabid anti-Semite. Working as an archaeologist for the American Palestine Exploration Society, he traveled extensively in Syria, Palestine, and what is now Jordan.
