[Samuel Parr:] Characters of the late Charles James Fox, Selected, and in part Written, by Philopatris Varvicensis. London: Printed for J. Mawman, 1809. First edition. Two volumes, 8vo (21.5), in early/period calf and marbled boards; xii, 312; [2], 313-833, [3] pp.

The second, and larger, of these volumes consists entirely of Samuel Parr's explanatory notes to the extracts, tributes, sermons, letters, etc., comprising the first volume. Clearly a labor of love for Parr, an ardent and longtime supporter of the great Whig politician Charles Fox, whom he describes in his dedication as "the steady guardian of constitutional freedom, the resolute opposer of intolerance, corruption, and unnecessary war..." Bindings with wear to the edges, spines and spine heads, cracking to two joints, but the boards are secure; title-page of vol. I with staining and loss to the top edge, laid down; mild toning and scattered spotting and small stains to the contents, else clean and sound, firmly bound.
