Christy, Howard Chandler
Out of the Shadow [ORIGINAL PASTEL ART BY HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY,
CAPTIONED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY HIM]

No Place Stated: Christie, Howard Chandler, 1918. Christy, Howard
Chandler. Original
Pastel Art. Matted and Framed. OFFERED AT A CRAZY LOW PRICE:
An ORIGINAL WORK IN PASTEL by Howard Chandler Christy depicting a World War
I [World War One] Soldier on a hospital-style bed being attended by an
attractive Nurse in a Red Cross Uniform. The Soldier's right arm is in a
sling (with his right hand visible) and the nurse is taking the soldier's
pulse with her right hand and appears to be holding a timing device in her
left hand in order to measure his heart rate. The soldier appears to be
wearing hospital clothing and one sees a medal over his front left chest.
There also exists (but is not part of this listing) a poster depicting the
same scene. (We have never seen the actual poster, but we have seen an
image of it.) Christy (January 10, 1872 – March 3, 1952) was a famed
portrait painter whose sitters included presidents, senators,
industrialists, movies stars, and socialites. From Wikipedia: "Christy
first attracted attention with his realistic illustrations and several
articles as a combat artist during the Spanish–American War that included
the Battle of Las Guasimas, the Battle of El Caney and the Battle of San
Juan Hill, published in Scribner's, Harper's, and Leslie's Weekly
magazines, and in Collier's Weekly. Christy gained especial prominence with
the series, Men of the Army and Navy, and a portrait of Colonel Roosevelt
that appeared on the cover of his Rough Riders series published in
Scribner's. These illustrations propelled Christy to national prominence.
>From this, he decided to turn away from war and painting men in uniform.
Instead, he yearned for beauty and created the "Christy Girl", redefining
the portrayal of women in America through his illustrations and portraits.
He painted patriotic posters for the US Navy and US Marine Corps. He is
also known for his illustrations of the works of such as the well-known war
correspondent, Richard Harding Davis." The present work of Art is in pastel
and resides on a pastel board, the bottom right corner of which is missing.
The pastel board is itself affixed to an openable hinged mat which is in
turn framed in a gold frame with the image covered in glass. The mat covers
the missing corner and the mat opening measures approximately 16 3/4 inches
and by 23 inches and the image itself measures approximately 18 inches by
24 inches (less the missing corner). The image shows a tiny indent to the
upper left quadrant - not affecting either of the depicted individuals. The
frame shows some tiny chips. [Nothing shown in the background of the images
included in this listing is for sale.] A wonderful ORIGINAL PASTEL WORK BY
THE RENOWNED ARTIST HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY. NOTE: AT THE PRESENT TIME,
THIS ITEM SHIPS ONLY TO A CONFIRMED ADDRESS WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED
STATES OF AMERICA. OTHER OPTIONS MAY BE AVAILABLE IF AGREED TO BY THE
SELLER. Very good + or Better. Item #3165
