Odd Photographic Trade Card for Dr. Grosvenor’s Bellcapsic Plaster
with Puppies.

Absolutely nothing about this card is normal- I suppose some cute
puppies is a good way to get your attention if the subject is
something as dry as bellcapsic plasters, but using an actual photo
card seems like the long way round, and as long as you’re going to
that trouble, why pencil in the text? The text is penciled on the
negative, not the card itself. Dr. Grosvenor was plastering his
bellcapsics in Boston around 1900. The Boston Public Library has an
example of this card in their collection which has text on the back
offering to send a larger copy of the image, and Historic New England
has an example where the good doctor used the same image on a more
traditional chromolithographed card.

Card. 4”x2.75”. Some soil and light wear. $40
