The Gentleman's Magazine, and Historical Chronicle. Volume XLII [42]. For the Year MDCCLXXII [1772]. London: Printed for D. Henry at St. John's Gate, [1772]. Twelve monthly issues (Jan.-Dec.), plus the supplement, volume title, indices and preface. Thick 8vo in early/period calf-backed marbled boards, gilt-lettered morocco spine label; [4] + 632 + [16] pp.; with numerous in-text charts, tables and woodcut illustrations, plus 29 copper-engraved plates and maps, nine of of which are folding (complete).

Contains much relating to the AMERICAS, North & South, including:
	- A folding MAP OF PART OF WEST FLORIDA, from Pensacola to the Mouth of the Iberville River, with a View to show the proper Spot for a Settlement on the Mississippi (includes parts of present day Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana), with a Plan for a New Settlement.
	- Several articles related to the above: Sketch for a SETTLEMENT ON THE MISSISSIPPI; J.P.'s Plan for a Settlement on the Mississippi objected to; On settling a new Colony on the Mississippi (J.P.'s reply).
	- PLATES depicting ANIMALS NATIVE TO THE AMERICAS: The Heron, or Soco, of America (browning); The Cayote [Coyote], or Fox of California; The Taye, or Californian Goat; The Ptarmigan of Hudson's Bay (offsetting); The piscivorous Toucan; The Military Macaw.

Binding with rubbing and wear; contents toned with occasional browning and intermittent offsetting, the latter occasionally quite heavy; else clean and sound, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the handsome bookplate of Marius Nielsen (engraved by Johannes Britze).
