[Thomas Percival:] A Socratic Discourse on Truth and Faithfulness; in which the nature, extent, and obligation, together with the various branches and subordinations of these moral duties are explained, illustrated, and enforced by examples: being the sequel to A Father's Instructions. Warrington: Printed by W. Ashton, MDCCLXXXI [1781]. First edition; xv, [1], 79, [1] pp.; with the half-title (coming loose); ESTC T85489. [WITH] Thomas Mulso: Callistus; or, The Man of Fashion. And Sophronius; or, The Country Gentleman. In Three Dialogues. London: Printed for Benjamin White... and James Dodsley, 1768. Second edition; vi, [2], 213, [1] pp. [WITH:] [Christopher Anstey:] The New Bath Guide: or, Memoirs of the B—r—d Family. In a Series of Poetical Epistles. London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1791. Fourteenth edition; viii, 175 pp.; engraved frontispiece.

Thomas Percival (1740-1804) was a Manchester-based physician, medical ethicist, social reformer and member of the Royal Society. His wide circle of acquaintance included Joseph Priestley, Samuel Parr, and Benjamin Franklin, whom he hosted in Manchester. His Socratic Discourse is uncommon: OCLC WorldCat locates only seven copies in libraries in the U.K. and three in the U.S. Also rather uncommon is Callistus, a novel in dialogue about two university classmates who pursue very divergent paths through life, the only book by the author.
