Hugh Clark: A Concise History of Knighthood. Containing the Religious and Military Orders which have been instituted in Europe... Also Accounts of the Installations of the Garter, Bath, Thistle, and St. Patrick; and Correct Lists of the Knights of Each. To which is added the Antient Ceremonies used at Duels, Combats, Jousts, and Tournaments. The Whole imbellished with 82 Copper Plates, comprising 116 Orders, Accurately Drawn and Neatly Engraved. Being the completest Collection ever published in Great Britain. London: Printed for W. Strahan, J. F. and C. Rivington, T. Payne, [et al], 1784. First edition. Two volumes, 8vo (21.5 cm), in nineteenth-century half calf and marbled boards, [2], x, 285, [1] pp.; [2], 268, [2] pp.; half-title page (soiled) in vol. I; 82 copper-engraved plates (complete). ESTC T144488.

Included are orders of Britain, Austria, Denmark, France, the German Empire, Holland, Naples, Palestine (Malta, Knights Templars and Hospitalers, Teutonic Order, etc.), Poland, Portugal, the Pope's Dominions, Prussia, Russia, Sardinia, Spain, Sweden, and Venice. All the plates are present. An additional plate of "Knights in Costume" from a 19th-century work has been laid in. Bindings with rubbing and wear, joints cracked but all the boards are holding; title-pages with the ink stamp of the Russell Institution (no other library markings); damp- and ink-stain to the contents of vol. II, quite severe on the title-page and first eight leaves, then diminishing to a smallish spot along the top edge (see photos), contents of both volumes with scattered spotting, occasional browning, front paste-downs with the signature of an earlier owner.
