R[obert] S[mith] Surtees: The Horseman's Manual: Being a Treatise on Soundness, the Law of Warranty, and Generally on the Laws Relating to Horses. London: Alfred Miller, 1831. First edition, 8vo (19.5 cm), in original[?] green patterned cloth, pink endpapers; xii + 132 pp.

First edition of the first book by R. S. Surtees (1803-1864), the future sporting novelist and creator of the hugely popular character Mr. John Jorrocks, the horse-riding cockney grocer who in turn inspired the creation of Dickens' Mr. Pickwick. This was the only book to bear Surtees' name on the title-page. Modest wear and bumping to the binding, some sunning to the spine and edges; toning to the edges of the text block, early owner's penciled signature erased from the title-page, a few light spots and touches of soiling to the leaves, two or three leaves with a bit of staining, else quite clean and sound, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the armorial bookplate of Merthyr Guest.
