George Coggeshall: Second Series of Voyages to Various Parts of the World, made between the Years 1802 and 1841. New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1852. First edition; 8vo (23.5 cm) in original publisher's patterned cloth; 335, [1] pp.; portrait frontispiece.

AUTOGRAPH PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the front free-endpaper: "To Robert Hyslop[?] with compliments of his old friend, the Author." George Coggeshall (b. 1784), a Connecticut-born sailor in the classic Yankee mold, was sent to sea as a boy, given his first command at the age of twenty-five, turned to privateering during the War of 1812, and altogether sailed on some eighty voyages and spent nearly sixty years of his life at sea. In this volume, he records his experiences during voyages to the West Indies, South America, Vera Cruz, Havana, Newfoundland, England, Gibraltar, Sweden, Sydney, etc.

Binding a bit rubbed and faded, some wear to the extremities, now protected in a mylar jacket; contents with scattered foxing, as often with American books of this period, most noticeable on the first and last few leaves, otherwise quite clean and bright, securely bound. Front paste-down with the large bookplate of the Alfred Collins Memorial and the smaller book label of an early owner, Eliza W. Osborner.
