Clerk of the Councell to his late Majestie. The Third Edition. With a Fourth Volume of New Letters, never Published before. London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley, and are to be sold at his Shop at the Princes Arms in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1655. An imperfect copy, lacking the extra engraved title-page and the last four leaves of the index (else complete), the text block has almost come loose from the binding (held at the rear hinge), front free-endpaper detached but present; previous owner's ink stamp (H. C. Maxwell) to the title; earlier owners' signatures to the front free-endpaper: J. Killingbecke (dated 1671) and Joannis Middleton. Contents with mild toning, occasional small spots, marginal damp-stain, otherwise quite clean and sound.

The third edition, but the first to include the fourth volume of letters. James Howell was a great traveller and a close friend of Ben Jonson. The letters relate primarily to the reigns of James I and Charles I and abound in entertaining and useful details of the period.
