[Anonymous:] A Rod for the Eaton[sic] School-Master's Back: or, A Letter from a Country School-Boy to Dr. Snape, occasion'd by one from him to the Bishop of Bangor. London: Printed for J. Roberts, near Oxford-Arms in Warwick-Lane, 1717. First edition. Slim 8vo (20 cm) in modern cloth-covered boards; 24 pp. ESTC N48831.

A pamphlet written in response to a pamphlet by Andrew Snape, headmaster of Eton College, attacking the principles expressed in yet another pamphlet written by Benjamin Hoadly, the Bishop of Bangor. This was all part of the so-called Bangorian Controversy, one of those abstruse doctrinal dust-ups that early eighteenth century English churchmen and theologians loved to throw themselves into. The main argument seems to have been about whether power in the English Church flows from the king down (the Tory, or Hoadlian, view) or from the people up (the Whig, or Snapesian, position).

An understandably uncommon book: ESTC locates only 4 copies in the UK and 3 in the U.S. Mild browning to the leaves, a few small spots and stains, else clean and sound in a firm and fresh modern binding. Front paste-down with the bookplate of Egerton Parker.
