Lonnie Lawrence Dennis Mixed Race Child Preacher Cabinet Photo Portrait
The note- “Lonnie Lawrence Dennis - age 6 yrs (illegible) baby
preacher” is scrawled in pencil on the back. Lawrence Dennis, born in
Atlanta in 1893, was a mixed-race child preacher who later became a
diplomat, author, and infamous American fascist. As a child preacher
he became nationally known- “At a revival we used to have, I remember
this little boy was preaching. He used to wear a little white robe. He
ran our revival and that’s when I joined the church,” recalled an
African-American resident of Buxton, Iowa of his 10-day stay there.
But when he entered his teenage years Dennis ditched his mixed-race
heritage and his evangelism. Wikipedia notes- “Following a notable
career as a child evangelist, he was sent to Phillips Exeter Academy
and then to Harvard University. He was of mixed race, but he concealed
that as a teenager and instead passed as a white man until his
death—even his wife and daughters did not know. During World War I,
Dennis commanded a company of military police in France. He graduated
from Harvard in 1920 and entered the foreign service. The turning
point of his life came when he served in Nicaragua. He resigned from
the foreign service in disgust at the US intervention there against
Sandino's rebellion. In 1941, Life called Dennis "America's No. 1
intellectual Fascist." In 1944, he was indicted in a group that ranged
from isolationists to pro-Nazi agitators, in a sedition prosecution
under the Smith Act. After seven months of proceedings the case ended
in a mistrial, after presiding judge died of a heart attack. In his
later years, Dennis repudiated his views of the 1930s and early 1940s,
became a critic of militarism and the Cold War. Alec Marsh suggests
that, "Dennis will find his place in the disenchanted anti-liberal
black company of Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, and George Schuyler”.
