BEHN (Aphra) and others. MISCELLANY, BEING A COLLECTION OF POEMS BY
SEVERAL HANDS. Together with Reflections on Morality, or Seneca
Unmasqued. London: J. Hindmarsh at the Golden Ball over against the
Royal Exchange in Cornhil, 1685. First Edition. Contemporary calf
(4-1/2" x 7"), neatly rebacked; (xiv), 299, (11), 301-382 pages.
Complete but for the blank leaf (a4) after the table of contents, often
lacking. A scarce collection of poetry with much by Behn and also
including poets Thomas Brown, Thomas Creech, Henry Crispe, and John
Wilmot. "Seneca Unmasqued, Or, Moral Reflections" is a translation of
maxims written by the Duc de La Rochefoucauld. Behn was one of the first
English women to earn her living by her writing, breaking cultural
barriers and serving as a literary role model for later generations of
women authors. She often wrote of women's sexuality, a rather radical
concept at the time. Her poem "The Disappointment," is a comic account
of male impotence from a woman's perspective. Virginia Woolf, in A ROOM
OF ONE'S OWN, said of Behn: "All women together ought to let flowers
fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn which is, most scandalously but rather
appropriately, in Westminster Abbey, for it was she who earned them the
right to speak their minds." WING 2230. Bookplate of Eleanor Holmes
Hinkley (1891-1971) on the front pastedown and her small ink stamp on
the front endpaper. Hinkley, a playwright and T. S. Eliot's cousin,
wrote DEAR JANE, a play about Jane Austen choosing her art over a
husband. Some worming to the bottom margin, not affecting the text, to
about a dozen leaves. Near Fine. (#021251)        $10,000
