Theodore Ettling: Map of the United States of North America, Upper & Lower Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia & British Columbia, Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, St. Domingo and the Bahama Islands. [London:] Illustrated London News, 1861.

Large colored lithograph map (sheet size: 108 x 77.5 cm / 42 1/2 x 30 1/2 in.) delineating the Union and Confederate states at the onset of the Civil War. Issued as a "Supplement to the Illustrated London News" on June 1, 1861, little more than a month after the war began. Missouri, Kentucky and Maryland are depicted as part of the Confederacy, though in fact they never left the Union. Other anomalies include: the proposed Arizona Territory is shown south of New Mexico; an unusual early proposed boundary is shown between Nevada and Utah; the eastern borders of Washington and Oregon extend into the Rocky Mountains.

In Very Good condition: mildly age-toned, original folds as issued, light creasing, a few light spots, one small hole on the center fold, otherwise clean and sharp, with no significant stains or tears. This is the original vintage map published by the London Illustrated News in 1861, NOT a reproduction.
