Greetings. For your consideration:

A nice set of the first three years of THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY, 1857-1859. One of the most important journals of the American literary scene, AM has been in continuous publication for 147 years.  Published in Boston by Phillips, Sampson and Company. These volumes are half leather with raised bands, decorative boards and marbled endpapers, tightly bound with sound hinges. Bound by E. Mellen Jr. of Worcester. 

Includes the complete text (and first printing) of “The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table” by Oliver Wendell Homes. Other contributors in the early years of AM included Longfellow, Emerson, Cabot, and Whittier, although all publications were printed anonymously at this time. The three volumes include Nos 1-20 of the journal, dated from Nov. 1857-June 1859, with 892, 900, and 780 pages respectively. Edges of boards are worn/rubbed, paper surfaces  
are well scuffed. Leather is in good condition, supple, lightly worn on hinges and scuffed in a few misc. spots. All vols. foxed throughout (mostly light). NOTE: On each volume, the top corner of the title page has been clipped off (about 1”x2”) – presumably someone removed ownership information. 

Vol. I shows some light dampstaining to outer corners on a 1" thick section of pages. Vol II, head of spine is a little pulled. Vol III has a small black ink mark on foredge and a little writing in margin on contents page...$150
