en fac-simile. Introduction et Notes par L.-J. Bouge.   Paris, Editions 
G.-P. Maisonneuve et Cie et Max Besson, Libraire, 1952. Unbound folios in 
paper envelope laid in original decorated portfolio with a large pa per 
label on the front cover. Lower right corner of the paper portfolio 
expertly repaired, small piece missing from the lower corner of plates A, 
B, and D affecting the letter of plate A. Contents otherwise fine in very 
near fine portfolio. 23 pp., followed by facsimiles of the issues of Le 
sourire, followed by 5 plates. One of 1,000 copies. "Reproduction en fac- 
simile des neuf numeros et trois supplements formant la collection a quoi 
il a ete ajoute cinq planches de bois graves qui completent l'iconog raphie 
du 'Sourire'". Le sourire was a monthly (irregular) periodical, reproduced 
from manuscript. Originally issued in Papeete, Tahiti, in 9 nos. and 3 
supplements, Aug. 1899-April 1900. Reproduced from Gauguin's copy in the 
possession of Bjarne Kroepelien.   $300.00

London, Paul Hamlyn [c1963]. Original black cloth. Ownership signature of 
Elizabeth Mongan, Copenhagen, Nov. 1963 on the front free endpaper (a few 
of her pencilled notes in the text). Lower front corner rubbed, faded strip 
at the top of the front cover, covers bowed, otherwise very good in lightly 
rubbed and darkened dust jacket with closed tears along the top edge. Text 
on 21 pages, followed by catalogue on unnumbered pages (15 entries with 
facing reproductions), followed by 15 numbered plates. November 7, 1963 TLS 
review of the book laid in.  $40.00
