(No. 7228 )  Harris, William C.. THE ANGLER'S GUIDE BOOK AND TOURISTS'
GAZETTEER OF THE FISHING WATERS OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, 1885.
New York: The American Angler, (1884). First printing, Full cloth,
Duodecimo, 250, xxx, [viii] pages. Good.
      Guide to over 7,000 angling waters, giving information on the cost of
guides, boats, and accommodations, best months for fishing, favored methods
used by locals, how best to reach the sites, and more. Nice section of
advertisements at rear featuring tackle, rubber waders, railroad lines,
hotels, etc. HAND #H161. Bound in dark green pebbled cloth over boards with
gilt-stamped spine and upper board. Mild rubs to cloth, some fraying at
extremities. Both front and rear endpapers split along hinges, textblock
still secure in binding. Some age toning and a few finger soil marks inside.

(No. 7230 )  Jennings, Preston J. (Foreword by Herman T. Spieth, Afterword
by Eugene V. Connett, III). A BOOK OF TROUT FLIES, CONTAINING A LIST OF THE
MOST IMPORTANT AMERICAN STREAM INSECTS & THEIR IMITATIONS.
New York: Derrydale Press, (1935). Limited edition, Full cloth, Octavo,
xviii, 190 pages, Color & black & white plates. near fine in a fair
slipcase.
      Jennings' book was a major advance in identifying stream insects and
matching them to fly patterns that best imitated them. An important work
which remains of great interest to modern flyfishermen. HAND #J54. This is
copy #638 of an edition of 850, bound in green cloth over boards with gilt
titles on dark blue title blocks on spine and upper board, gilt stamped
border and decorative pattern on upper board, top edge gilt. There are 7
hand-colored plates and 5 black and white plates by Alma Froderstrom
illustrating the insects and flies, along with a black and white
photographic frontispiece plate of Jennings fishing the Ausable. All plates
have original tissue guards intact. There is no significant wear to the
book, but some minor browning to cloth and some age-toning to endpapers and
textblock edges. Rough-cut fore and bottom edges. Slipcase is green paper
over boards with edge rubs, some dampstaining, bumps to a couple of corners,
and some slight splitting to paper along short sections of a few joints. It
has protected the book well.    $650.00

SKETCHES BY LOVERS OF THE ART, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS OF STANDARD FLIES.
Manchester, VT: C. F. Orvis, 1883. First printing, Full cloth, Duodecimo,
[iv], 302 pages, Colored plates. Good.
      Collection of 22 fishing stories, including F. E. Pond on the Poetry
of Fly Fishing; Seth Green on How to Cast a Fly; L. A. Beardslee on the
Salmon and Trout of Alaska; Fred Mather on the Grayling; A. Louis Miner, Jr.
on Fly-Fishing in the Yosemite; and much more. Illustrated with 15 color
plates lithographed by Milton Bradley and showing flies made by Charles
Orvis. BRUNS #O18; HAND #O97. Bound in original mustard-colored decorated
cloth over boards. Title page illustration by Vedder. Some mild bumps and
rubbing to cloth at spine ends, with slight fraying at top fore corners of
boards. Cloth is splitting along bottom 1.25" of lower joint. Front hinge
cracked, a couple of signatures beginning to pull. Overall an attractive
copy but with the mechanics of the binding weakening.    $350.00
