We are pleased to offer today:
[Scarlett, J. Yorke]. Field Exercise & Evolutions of Infantry. London:
Queen’s Printer [Eyre and Spottiswoode], 1862. Pocket edition. 12vo.,
full calf with impressed gilt arms and title, still bearing brass front
cover clasp (missing back cover clasp and tongue); 537 pp., illustrated
by 63 largely full-page line drawings, endpapers with publisher’s
catalogue and advert’s. Not a book for the library but for the
haversacks of subalterns, best described as a well-kept field copy
(several early pages nibbled along the top margins, minor damp stains,
rubricated edges faded) but generally clean and tight. Begins with
instruction of recruits and concludes with conduct of funeral parties
(“In marching back, music not to play, or drums to beat, until the party
is entirely clear of the burying ground.”). 175 USD
Cordially,
