1.        An Important Landmark in the Development of Maritime Law

Contemporary vellum with lapped fore-edges, raised bands, green edges.
A few minor stains, outer layer of vellum peeled from spine, a few
tiny scuffs and cracks to edges, boards somewhat bowed, vellum
beginning to break through pastedowns. Striking pictorial title page
depicting SS. Anthony of Padua, Nicholas of Myra, Elmo and Claire of
Assisi in the clouds, blessing two galleons below, woodcut decorated
initials, large woodcut printer device to verso of final index leaf.
Early owner signature to verso of front free endpaper, early
underlining in ink to a few passages, (very) faint later library
stamps to foot of title page and foot of leaf with printer device.
Faint dampstaining to a few leaves at beginning and end of text block,
occasional light foxing, interior otherwise fresh. Appealing. $6,000.
* Early edition of the medieval code governing navigation and commerce
that formed the basis for later European maritime law. First published
in Barcelona in 1484, it embodied the rules of law and practice
commonly followed by the commercial judges in the chief ports around
the Mediterranean. It became a maritime common law of the
Mediterranean and a foundation for subseqeunt maritime laws and
customs during the following century. It circulation was widest in
Italy, especially among the Venetians. In addition to maritime law, it
contains a great deal of information about the day-to-day operations
of a ship and practical advice on seafaring. This edition not in

Editor. The Institutes of Justinian. With Notes. With Original Notes
and References by a Member of the New-York Bar. New York: John S.
Voorhies, 1852. xv, 710 pp. Octavo (6" x 9-1/2"). Later buckram, red
and black lettering pieces, residue from owner label to spine. Some
shelfwear, moderate soiling, hinges cracked but secure, first three
signatures partially detached. Small early owner stamps to
preliminaries and front board, interior otherwise fresh. $350.
* Third edition. Latin and English in parallel columns, notes starred
to those of the first edition (1812). Includes a bibliography of civil
law and the complete text of The Law of the Twelve Tables. A landmark
in the American reception of Roman law, this edition includes
fascinating notes that compare it with that of the United States. The
unnamed "Member of the New-York Bar is George Harris [1722-1796].

center of leaf from production error with minor loss to text, partil
crack to center of text block. Offsetting to margins of endleaves,
browning to first quarter of text block, light foxing to a few leaves.

* First edition, uncommon in the trade. A guide to all aspects of the
common law for laymen. The publisher believed that the public was
familiar with the Constitution, but required further education about
the common law. Considering the controversy over the common law at the
time of its publication, the work can also be viewed as a defense of

book]...and it appeared to me to be executed with judgment, precision
and accuracy, and to be extremely well calculated for the useful

* Story's enormous influence on American law is demonstrated in this
collection edited by his son. It includes an autobiography, which is
in the form of a fascinating long letter to his son, and many other
articles, essays, lectures and biographical sketches of judges and
lawyers (including Chief Justice John Marshall and Associate Supreme
Court Justice Bushrod Washington). Other pieces are a proposed course
of legal study and essays on maritime law, piracy, the slave trade,

697, [6] pp. Octavo (5-3/4' x 9"). Includes six-page printer
catalogue. Contemporary sheep, blind fillets to boards, raised bands
and lettering piece to spine. Moderate rubbing and a few scuffs, some
wear to spine ends and corners, front board loose but holding, front
free endpaper lacking. Small hole to corner of title page, clean tear
to fore-edge of leaf, lower corner lacking from another, all three
without loss to text. Early owner signature to head of title page.
Occasional faint dampstaining, light foxing. A solid copy. $750.
* First edition. The first legal work bearing Story's name and the
first American book of entries of precedents. The work's "notes and
references show that the author had made no ordinary attainments in
the science of special pleading....": Marvin, Legal Bibliography
(1847) 668. Story was Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, a
professor at Harvard Law School and the most respected and prolific

7.     Concerns the Slave Trade, Right of Search and Sovereignty
Wheaton, Henry [1785-1848]. Enquiry Into the Validity of the British
Claim to a Right of Visitation and Search of American Vessels
Suspected to be Engaged in the African Slave-Trade. Philadelphia: Lea
and Blanchard, 1842. 151, 12 pp. Includes twelve-page publisher
catalogue. Contemporary moire cloth. Light rubbing with minor wear to
spine ends, corners bumped and lightly worn. Later armorial book plate
of William Paine Sheffield to front pastedown, signature of his father
to head of title page. Foxing to endleaves, interior otherwise fresh.
A nice copy. $450.
* First American edition, issued the same year as the first English
edition. Wheaton was America's foremost authority of international law
during the nineteenth century. His Enquiry criticizes Britain's
seizure of American vessels engaged in the Atlantic slave trade.
Although the importation of slaves was prohibited at this time under
the U.S. Constitution, Wheaton rejected the right of other nations to
enforce this American law. Instead of assisting the United States, he
reasons, such actions are a violation of its sovereignty. Sheffield
[1857-1919], a member of a important Rhode Island family, was a U.S.
