LaGUARDIA, Fiorello. SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH. An 8" x 10"
photograph of perhaps New York City's most popular mayor,
often referred to as "Little Flower" or "The Napoleon of New
York" due to his height of 5'2". Born of Jewish and Italian
parents, LaGuardia was elected to Congress in 1916 on the
Republican ticket, interrupting his term to serve as a
decorated pilot on the Italian front in World War I. He led
the city as a Republican mayor from 1933 to 1945 working
closely with the New Deal administration of Democratic
President Franklin Roosevelt to secure federal subsidies
enabling New York City to build parks, low-income housing,
bridges, schools, and hospitals and to create a rapid
transit system that was one of the finest in the world. The
first three-term New York City mayor decided not to seek a
fourth term in 1945 and died of cancer in 1947. This
photograph shows a serious LaGuardia and is INSCRIBED "To
the Program/America Speaks to Poland" and SIGNED by the
mayor. Slight defect in the image on the opposite side of
the inscription created in the process of developing. Fine
and uncommon. $450.00
