[Avery] Sieben-Morgan, Ruth. SAMUEL PUTNAM AVERY (1822-1904), ENGRAVER ON
WOOD; A BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHICAL STUDY.
Hartford; self-published:1942. Avery was a famous art collector, dealer and
philanthropist. He was also, earlier in his life, a talented and successful
wood-engraver of illustrations and advertisements. This publication was a
master's thesis project which, although somewhat crude in execution,
contains much interesting information on his life and work. 9"x11.5", 157
mimeographed pages, several decent quality b&w illustrations; binder, some
cover soil; ex-institutional. [21521] $150.00

[Foster] Green, Samuel Abbott. JOHN FOSTER. THE EARLIEST AMERICAN ENGRAVER
AND THE FIRST BOSTON PRINTER.
Boston; Massachusetts Historical Society: 1909. 1st Edition. Karpel
comments- "There are several errors in the volume, which more recent
scholarship has corrected, but it remains a valuable bibliographical tool,
particularly for its list of imprints. Green was the first to link Foster
with the portrait of Richard Mather, so his work is of importance to later
scholars. An excellently prepared bibliography of Foster's imprints, and a
short title list of attributions follows the text. A short list of
engravings and of his imprints ends the book". Hardcover. 7.5"x10.5", 149
pages plus 12 b/w plates with 13 illustrations. Light cover wear, spine
head and base chipped; slight tear at spine head. Ex-Long Island Historical
Society with bookplate, blindstamp and deaccession stamp, [00438] $75.00

[Greene Collection] Wolf, Alice. THE EDWARD B. GREENE COLLECTION OF
ENGRAVED PORTRAITS AND PORTRAIT DRAWINGS AT YALE UNIVERSITY.
New Haven: 1942. Edition limited to 500 copies. "The Greene Collection
includes European engraved portraits and portrait drawings from the
sixteenth to the nineteenth century, with the German sixteenth century and
the French engravings of the seventeenth century best represented" (jacket
blurb). Theodore Sizer, who wrote the Preface, notes- "an attempt has been
made to elucidate the less obvious details. Armorial bearings and symbolic
devices have been interpreted; poetical and explanatory inscriptions,
except those in French, have been translated in full." There is a
cross-index of engravers. Hardcover. 9.5"x12.5", 141 pages plus 35
plates with 44 b&w illustrations, dj remnant; bookplate removed. [21524]
$125.00

Schretlen, M.J. & M.J. Friedlaender. DUTCH AND FLEMISH WOODCUTS OF THE
FIFTEENTH CENTURY.
Boston; Houghton Mifflin Company: 1925. The author writes- "it (is) strange
that so little attention should have been paid to the Dutch woodcuts of the
15th century... the art of woodcutting of that period flourished in a very
remarkable and characteristic way in the Netherlands. It was a living art
in the truest sense of the word, and though it appears to have originated
directly from the art of miniatures... it still reveals an intense life of
its own everywhere." The only serious study of the subject prior to this
one was Conway's in 1884 which, as Schretlen points out, has the
unforgivable defect (for a book about prints) of lacking any
illustrations! Hardcover. 9.5"x13", viii + 71 pages, plus 84 b/w plates. A
fine, bright, clean, crisp copy. [00251] $200.00
