Alexandria: Privately Printed, 1979. 2nd edition, Full cloth, Quarto, xvi,
358, pages + supplement, Black & White photographs, illustrations. Fine in a
near fine dust jacket, Jacket in Mylar protector.
      A treasure-trove of history, anecdotes, river lore, and historic
photographs from life along the Potomac. Chapters include: Indians; The
Tobacco Society; Sturgeon and Terrapin; Sailing and Rowing Craft; The Great
Schooners; Steamboats and Scows; Canals and railroads; Bridges; Negroes;
John Wilkes Booth; Riverside Stores; Drinking; Sex, only on the river;
Geology and Geography; and much more. Well illustrated. Includes an
excellent bibliography categorized by subject, a complete index, and a nine
page pictorial supplement of photographs of watercraft, wharves, the stub of
the Washington Monument in 1868, etc. A superb regional title with
information on everything from skipjacks to the Lincoln assassination to the
C&O Canal. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Tilp on title page. Bound in blue cloth
over boards with gilt-stamped spine lettering, endpaper maps. Tiny extremity
rubs, shallow wrinkles to cloth edges at spine ends. Jacket has a few
shallow edge wrinkles and rubs, a few short closed edge tears, and a bit of
faint browning in spots along joints. A clean, crisp and bright copy
