[WEBSTER, Noah]. THE AMERICAN REVIEW OF HISTORY AND POLITICS... OF
LITERATURE AND STATE PAPERS. 3 volumes, each SIGNED by Webster.
Philadelphia: Farrand and Nicholas 1811-1812. First Edition. The
first three volumes of a total of four, containing six of the eight
issues published, of the first standard quarterly review in America
(Mott, A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MAGAZINES, Vol. 1, pp. 271-2). Edited by
Robert Walsh, this important periodical included commentary on what
we now call the War of 1812 as well as printings of U.S. government
documents and essays on books and other subjects. What makes this set
stand out is that each of the three volumes has been INSCRIBED on the
front pastedowns to the Hartford Library Company and SIGNED by Noah
Webster as follows: "Presented to H L C/by N Webster." Webster, born
in West Hartford in 1758 and a graduate of Yale, created the first
American textbooks making use of American subject matter. His speller
became tremendously successful and was used into the twentieth
century. In 1828 he published AN AMERICAN DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH
LANGUAGE, the most ambitious publication to date in America. Between
his textbooks and his dictionary, Webster did much to influence the
standardization of American spelling and pronunciation. His autograph
is rather uncommon. Each volume has the Hartford Library Association
bookplate on the front pastedown beneath Webster's inscription and a
Hartford Public Library label and pocket at the rear. The binding
consists of the original boards, but each spine has been covered with
modern binder's tape with the title and library call numbers written
on it. Internally clean with light, even browning to text. Good
                                                               $3500.00
