      Mahan's classic argument that control of the seas was the decisive 
factor in modern warfare. His work was widely read internationally, 
particularly in Germany, and fueled naval buildup around the world on the 
eve of World War I. Illustrated with several battle plans and maps, 
including one fold-out. HATTENDORF, #A2l. Bound in dark blue cloth over 
boards with spine lettered in gilt, man-of-war vignette in gilt on upper 
board, black endpapers, top edge gilt. Minor extremity rubs, a few light 
surface scuffs. Hinges sound.    $75.00

CONDITIONS OF NAVAL WARFARE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, AND 
OF ITS SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT DURING THE SAIL PERIOD.
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1913. Later printing, Original cloth, 
Octavo, xviii, 500 pages, black & white plates, battle plan. Good.
      America's foremost 19th century naval theorist discusses the 
commanding qualities of six British admirals. Six portrait plates with 
double tissue guards. HATTENDORF #A10e; ALBION, p. 67 (starred item). This 
copy appears to have belonged to noted maritime historian and bibliographer 
Robert G. Albion, with his name and address label from Harvard on front 
pastedown. There is another prior owner name dated 1919 penned at top edge 
of front pastedown. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards, top edge gilt. 
Minor wear to extremities, some splitting along inner margin of front 
endpapers. Gilt spine lettering has darkened.    $50.00

POWER UPON THE FRENCH REVOLUTION AND EMPIRE, 1793-1812 (IN TWO VOLUMES).
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1897. Original cloth, Octavos, xxii, 380 
& xx, 428 pages, Maps and battle plans. Good.
      Mahan's important study on the dynamics of sea power (a term coined by 
him), in the Napoleonic era. HATTENDORF, #A4K. Bound in dark blue cloth over 
boards with spines lettered in gilt and upper boards decorated with a 
man-of-war stamped in gilt, black endpapers, top edges gilt. A prior owner 
has neatly pasted a portrait of Mahan on front pastedown of volume I. Both 
volume have minor rubs to extremities. Hinges remain snug. Volume I has a 
patch of minor dampstaining confined to exterior cloth near top of lower 
board. Volume II shows a bit of dampstaining to fore edges of about the 
first 20 pages, with some minor associated rippling. Otherwise a clean, well 
preserved set.    $100.00
