Hannum, Anna Paschall & John Bach McMaster (eds.). A QUAKER FORTY-NINER.
THE ADVENTURES OF CHARLES EDWARD PANCOAST ON THE AMERICAN FRONTIER.
Philadelphia; University of Pennsylvania Press: 1930. Pancoast's
reminiscences of his life on the Western frontier. He left Philadelphia in
1840 for St. Louis where he tried and failed to establish a drug business.
He then became part owner of a steamboat on the Missouri River, but that
too eventually ended in disaster, so he joined a party headed for the
California goldfields. Tiring of the mining life, he joined with friends to
start a ranch which also failed, so... "he returned to Philadelphia richer
in experience, but not in pocket, then when he had left it fourteen years
before". Hardcover. 6"x9", 402 pages, 13 b/w plates; light wear to the

GOLD IN CALIFORNIA. Palo Alto; Lewis Osborne: 1968. Edition limited to 2100
numbered copies. Reprints a series of 19th century essays on the discovery
of gold in California and life in the mines. The text is illustrated with
many interesting period engravings. 7"x10.5", 80+ pages, many b&w
illustraitons; folding title-page printed in gold; inset folding facsimile
of the "Californian" newspaper. Hardcover. A fine copy in a soiled plain

TRAIL. Boston; Little, Brown and Company: 1931. ~An engrossing recounting
of the '49 Gold Rush, based on miners diaries and other period sources.

Ritchie, Robert Welles. THE HELL-ROARIN' FORTY-NINERS. New York; J.H. Sears
& Company: 1928. A rip-roarin' set of tales and history of the Gold Rush
Days. Hardcover. 6"x8", 298 pages, b/w plates; pictorial red and black
covers; light wear; jacket-flap description of the book glued to the front
pastedown. Inscribed by the author. [02372]
Stillman, J.D.B. & Kenneth Johnson. THE GOLD RUSH LETTERS OF J.D.B.
STILLMAN. Palo Alto; Lewis Osborne: 1967. Edition limited to 2350 copies.
With an introduction by Kenneth Johnson. Dr. Jacob Stillman arrived in San
Francisco, California in 1849 and then settled in Sacramento. These
letters, written in journal form and covering 1849 and 1850 were first
published as part of the book "Seeking the Golden Fleece" in 1877.
~Hardcover. 7.5"x11", 75+ pages, illustrated with period woodcuts and other
illustrations; plain white jacket; former owner's light stamp utilized
twice on the front and twice on the rear endpapers. A near fine copy in a
lightly worn jacket. [02375]
