Towne, Henry R. [Robinson]. FINANCIAL PROJECT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL
EXHIBITION, COLUMBUS QUADRI-CENTENNIAL, NEW YORK, 1892. [New York]:
n.p., 1889. 21 pp. Sm. 8vo. Paper wrappers (paperback). First
edition. Henry Robinson Towne (1844-1924) was an engineer and
businessman, head of the Yale Lock Co., head of the Merchants'
Association of New York, author of A Treatise on Cranes (1883), and
would later be a member of the Federal Reserve. Here he details plans
for an International Exhibition for 1892 which would include the
building of a 1320 foot high observation tower (similar to the Eiffel
Tower), a Coliseum with seating for 50,000, and a circulating railway
which would move both outside and inside buildings. Includes
estimated financing (from the City of course) and revenues. Chicago,
however, was where the World's Columbian Exposition was held in 1893.
Scarce. OCLC and RLIN show no copies of this separate publication
though the Smithsonian and the NYPL each have a copy of "Papers
relating to the international exhibition, of 1892," which includes

Woodworth, John Maynard [Surgeon General]. ALS: "TO THE CHAMBERS OF
COMMERCE AND BOARDS OF TRADE OF THE CITIES OF NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA,
BALTIMORE, BOSTON, CHICAGO, ST. LOUIS, AND CINCINNATI [TO REPORT ON
THE YELLOW FEVER]. Washington, D. C.: n.p. 1878. 2 leaves. Sm. 4to.
First edition. Letter from Department of the United States Treasury,
Office Surgeon General United States Marine-Hospital Service,
Washington, Sept. 30, 1878. Signed John Maynard Woodworth (1837-1879)
first Surgeon General along with his emboss. "Woodworth was directly
responsible for creating a medical corps of professional physicians
whose national orientation raised them above politics and mediocrity.
His vision of a federal public health service was the blueprint his
successors followed in building the strong service that evolved in
the twentieth century," (ANB). Concerns the appointment of a Yellow
Fever Commission after and outbreak in Memphis. In the wake of the
1878 yellow fever epidemic, quarantine powers were briefly entrusted
to the Marine Hospital Service, but without funding to execute them.
Even this commission existed only because Elizabeth Thompson of New
York donated the funds, without which the President was helpless.
OCLC and RIN show no copies. Chamber of Commerce stamp, mail fold,
otherwise fine. [27639] $100
